4 Tips for a First Time Cat Owner

Hi there! Thank you for stumbling across our blog. Pineapplesays is dedicated to sharing information we (Pineapple, Simba and Muffin) think you might find valuable as a current cat owner, cat enthusiast or a potential first-time cat owner. I put together “4 Tips Every Cat Owner Should Know” because I too was terrified of what it meant to own a cat as a first-time cat owner. The idea of raising a cat meant that I would have to adapt my living environment to meet my cat’s needs in order to prevent any potential incidents.

The first thing I learned was to remove cords out of my cat’s sight. There is some wisdom to the phrase “Out of sight and out of mind”. Cords can be something that you may not think can be an immediate danger, but there are very severe consequences for everyone involved. In my personal experience, I have learned along the way that every cat has a different personality. It is important to understand what catches your cat’s attention and learn how to keep them entertained. For example, Muffin (Havana Brown Kitty) can get really bored and will find things to chew on. This is a bad habit I was not aware of until we (Peter and I) adopted our third cat. If your cat is a chewer, you will definitely want to check out our cat chew toy recommendations.

The second thing I quickly learned was to how create a safe space my cats can use to recharge and enjoy. As previously mentioned, every cat has a different personality so you will need to observe their natural habits and where they like to retreat. Pineapple (black kitty) loves to nap on her window hammock aka “The Throne”, Simba (orange kitty) loves to nap on top of the fridge where it’s warm and Muffin loves crawl under the box spring of our bed. If you don’t create a safe space for your kitty, your kitty won’t have a problem creating one of it’s own without your permission. 😅 Please note that these examples are just one of many places that your cat will enjoy retreating to and will definitely ignore you if you can’t find them. I highly recommend buying a cat tree with three tiers or a window hammock so your cat can spread out and sun bathe. Trust me, your cat will appreciate it!

Our third tip is to do your research on litter and litter boxes. I was overwhelmed by the number of litter and litter box options you could find online and in-store at your local pet shop. I think that it’s important to evaluate the need for basic litter box essentials and wants. You don’t need the nicest litter box on the block, but you will need to decide how often you want to clean the litter box and which litter product you will want to purchase again and again. I can tell you firsthand that Tidy Cats Light Weight was the option for me, since it’s easier to carry and budget friendly. I would even recommend looking for litter furniture and litter mats that help trap the litter in one area. If you have some wiggle room in your budget, I would recommend looking into a roomba or dyson vacuum.

The last tip I highly recommend for all cat lovers is to socialize with cats! Cats love attention and give affection in return in their own ways. Peter and I do our best to provide our babies Pineapple, Simba and Muffin attention to their liking. Giving them treats will not cut it, and Muffin is an example of this throughout the day. Muffin is very vocal and will let you know that she needs some kisses and hugs. Simba will let you know that he needs his belly rubs by flopping around on the floor. Pineapple will stretch upward on your leg until you pick her up. Observe your cat’s communication and you will win their hearts!
